What do you look for in a portable power station? Like any battery, capacity is a huge determining factor. The bigger the battery capacity, the more juice you can supply to your devices. Of course, the more battery capacity you have, the more you can expect in terms of size, weight, and cost so keep that in mind.

The type of battery is also important: Lithium-ion batteries are energy dense and charge quickly while lithium-polymer batteries are less energy dense but more reliable in terms of safety. Finally, you’ll want to keep an eye out for wattage output. More power-hungry gadgets will require a certain wattage in order to just turn on, much less continue running. Many of these portable power stations can be charged by plugging them into outlets, at home or in your car, but solar panels are a greener solution that may save you money in the long run.

With a 293Wh capacity and 300W output power, the Jackery Explorer 300 features two pure sine wave AC outlets. It can charge up to six devices at once and can be charged via a fast charge 3.0 port, USB-A port, or DC car port. The battery management system offers over-current, short-current, over-discharge, over-charge, over-voltage, and thermal protection. This power station is compatible with the Jackery SolarSaga 100 solar panel.

The EF Ecoflow River mini measures only 5.2 by 9.8 by 5.5 inches and weighs 6.3 pounds, making it incredibly portable. With a capacity of 210Wh and a 300W output, the EF Ecoflow River mini has two pure sine wave AC outlets, three USB-A ports, and one 12V DC car port. This device supports rapid charging and can be recharged to 80% capacity in one hour.

The Anker 523 has a 289Wh capacity and can charge eight devices simultaneously. Measuring 10.04 by 5.47 by 5.83 inches and weighing 9.24 pounds, it’s the heftiest portable power station on our list. This model also only has a single Pure Sine Wave AC outlet and it is designed to deliver power to devices with a total rating of less than 300W, meaning it won’t be able to power devices like hot plates or hair dryers if you intend to travel with those things.
